6. The current uproar over the flooding problem apart, the IDP camps have already become a very explosive and controversial issue. If one is to go by the daily utterences on the subject from various quarters within the country itself and beyond, the controversies seems to be still in a process of gathering momentum. In order to defuse the situation in some measure, there have been suggestions that authorities should seriously consider the possibility of releasing some camp dwellers in vulnerable categories such as old people, pregnant mothers and children, among others, who are obviously no security risks, to live with families of their relatives and friends and other well wishers. Many reasonable and responsible people think that if some serious and genuine attempt could be made by the authorities in this direction, the benefits arising will be substantial and manyfold, including not only decongestion at camp sites, but others as well such as proof of genuine intentions on the part of the government to mitigate the conditions of human suffering that exist. Of course, no person with any sense of responsibility can suggest that the military authorities should abandon the security screening procedures at the camps or resettle displaced people without complelting demining operations in the settlement areas concerned.
