Governments blames UN agencies for flooding in IDP camps
The government is blaming UN agencies for the flooding in IDP camps in Vavuniya saying they had taken the responsibility to construct drainage systems and flood preventive measures at the sites.
“The UN agencies involved in the IDP camps had taken the responsibility of constructing the drainage systems and flood preventive measures. So the Government cannot be blamed for the poor condition of the drainage systems which burst and failed,” Minister of Resettlement and Disaster Management, Rizad Bathiudeen said
heavy rain over the last two days saw flooding at the camps in Vavuniya due to the failure of the drainage system forcing some of the displaced people being shifted to other areas for shelter.
1. The way how these people are treated in these camps clearly Showa that we have descrimination in this country. We have well equiped animal sanctuaries, we take care of this animals better than humans. We should show mercy to those little children and pregnent women suffering in the pouring rain.
2. While the blame game is going on the poor IDPs are suffering. We all know how the government red tape works. Let it be any government it takes its own cool time! Have we forgotten how George Bush was blamed for his delay in helping the Katrina victims in New Orleans? It was painfully slow and many died. However, IDPs are our own Sri Lankans, they have suffered enough in the hands of the Tigers providing them shield to protect the more precious lives of the LTTE leadership! Our president publicly promised the they will be rehabilitated within six months and half of that time period is gone. As we all know time is running fast and this problem has to be solved by any means. We hope the president will beat the dead line set by him.
3. why UN only for this you loock after your people without begiging what about china and pakistan
4. Why you blame the UN if you consider these people are citizens of SL.
5. Why are these people who are our so called brothers and sisters treated like this?Everything is blamed on the UN or NGO s nothing seems to be our fault our lack of thought that when the rains come the camps will be flooded.Such callousness and inhumanity simply because they belong to the minority. We can stand on roof tops and shout all we can that we are all equal but just one picture like this tells it all. This is not about Katrina ,this is about innocent people kept locked up with no place to go,and staying out in the poring rain.Do we not know the weather patterns in this country? There will be more rain to come .This is a sin, whatever religion we practice.
6. That right . Blame everyone but yourselves.
7. GOSL should take some immediate action to make a better shape of camp for these peoples. This is not acceptable.GOSL should not trust this INGOs anymore. They only wants to grab $$$
8. This issue was discussed well over 12 weeks ago at the Water-San Cluster meeting, how come nothing has been done??? The Govt. can’t just palm off the blame to the UN at the same time; it is the UN that has been donated with colossal amounts of money by foreign governments and other concerned parties to actively work on redressing these issues. This is a crime! UN agencies wake up and drop your ‘we are doing you a favour’ attitude!!!!!
9. In fact we,the govt did the war and made the people refugees and the peoples are sri lankan not UN’s. So how can we blame UN for not providing facilities to the victims. The govt must take the blame and make immediate steps to save the people
10. Another joke. But i guess as usual alot of people will agree to the ministers comment.
11. Here we go!!! UN has been asking to release those people and resettle them. It was Mahinda who refused. Now you complain against UN!! It is really funny. GO SRI LANKA GO!!
11. why UN? Did UN do the war? So dont put the blame on them. shame you are spineles. You alwasy pass the buck to others to hide your errors. I am not a tamil. I always hate LTTE but see who can bear to see these helpless people situation. Do you think they are animals? Can even animals live with this condition. Think men
12. You subcontracted your responsibility , then went for a sleep, until rain woke you up Mr. Minister? Now, next report from the Minister would be, President intervened and requested an immediate report on this incidence…and then, everyone will be sleeping. How cheap human have become………….
13. It is not fair nor right to blame the United Nations for poor drainage in the IDP camps.
14. It is the responsibility of the GOSL to do everything in their power to take care of our own citizens. STOP blaming outsiders. Just Thank them that they are here to help us. The UN is NOT to blame. Its our IDP’s and Its our Camps and therefore its our responsibility. Is this why we do not allow independent observers. GOSL you are going to lose the good will for winning the war if you do not take care or our Tamil brothers and sisters. You have already lost the goodwill of outsiders, very soon you will lose the goodwill of Sri lankan citizens. Treat these people with respect and dignity. They are S/L civilians. Words are not good enough its time for Deeds.

it is the government’s responsibility and not to blame on other for its failure. Either government racially discriminate or running a bad administration. Therefore, the government should look into the reason for its own failure for further improvement.
Dear Minister, why don’t UN take the resposible to whole SL , they will do better than you
Don’t worry, all of this is part of the “Humanitarian Operations” to free the civilians!!!
Why should the UN be responsoble for what happens here. Where are the patriots???
